We’ve delayed our Wednesday Wonder this week in order to tie it in with the Easter weekend. On the theme of life, death and rebirth, our piece of the week is ‘the Bodily Time Machine’ by Yvonne Mabs Francis. It is about a delusion she had about turning back in time and returning to the womb. And to avoid dying when time turned back to before she was born, her soul entered the body of her father, so that in case the union between her mother and father failed at least a part of her lived on. Five weeks, fifteen workshop participants: we present to you, a collaborative reproduction of Frida Kahlo’s ‘Moses’.

Fifteen different styles, 20 painted squares, acrylic on paper. Not one of us knew what the other was painting, or whose piece would fit together with whose.
.
The beauty in this exercise is not found in perfection, but letting go of striving for perfection, trusting that the sum of its parts outweighs perfectionism.

I’ve never heard so much grumbling about a project, knowing full well that once the pieces came together the artists would be amazed. And they were.
