Ten artists explore ‘beauty’ in a group show curated by Peter Herbert and The Arts Project.

“A stunning new art exhibition on the theme of Beauty and the Beast. Service users are among the ten artists whose work will be displayed in The Shapes and Lines of Beauty, including striking images by a former soldier who received treatment at the Trust for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Shaun Cole’s work evokes the colours of the Middle East, where he served as a soldier and he credits his works’ striking use of repetitive dots, reminiscent of aboriginal art, with helping him to “bring order” to his experience of PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder).

The aim of this latest exhibition in St Pancras Hospital is to encourage people to consider the nature of so-called ‘beauty’ and to question pleasing appearances.

Arts Project curator, Peter Herbert, who will be displaying two of his own pieces of work, said: “This is an exhibition bursting with warmth, vigour and imagination. Ten artists have produced work celebrating ideas of beauty and covering a broad spectrum. This is a fascinating concept and one that is well worth exploring further”.

Introducing the Artists…

SYBIL ADELAJA expresses the face and body as conduits to the inner soul though obsessive line drawing scribbles, which convey real power and forceful imagination.

CHRIS BIRD’s images which use rapidograph pens to create black lines on white with red colours have been published in THE BIG ISSUE and exhibited over the years. The result is a growing body of work responding to the beautiful and confusing energy of life in the big city. Within complex patterns the artist is drawn to faces in the crowd through which he emphasises marginalised people who inhabit the daily life of our city.

EDWARD BLAKE produces work inspired by a background studying architecture. These composite creations revel in layers of frames within frames, stained glass inserts decorated with flowers, foliage and texts of a personal nature.

RUBY BRADLEY is a self taught artist who contrasts traditional and delicate still life paintings of vases/bowls of flowers with new work, which develop into more abstract impressions of line and colour.

SHAUN COLE is a former soldier who was one of the war artists featured in our earlier ‘THE WAY AHEAD’ exhibition. Here, the artist returns with a wider range of work that evokes the colours of the Middle East, where he served as a soldier. His striking use of repetitive dots, recalls aboriginal art. This is artwork that helps to bring order to the artist’s experience of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He is currently studying for a Fine Arts degree at Ipswich University in Sussex.

MANEL GUELL is a painter who evokes the spiritual genesis of an often troubled Spanish social and artistic history. His delicate work using lines and shapes is rich with references to the surreal abstractions of Spanish artists including Goya and Luis Bunuel.

RICHARD KABY had open heart surgery after suffering a heart attack in 2014. His change in lifestyle while recovering resulted in a new awareness of the minutiae of everyday life and he was challenged to take one photo a day pasted onto Face Book in a project i flower. Using a phone camera as his eye ,the photographer discovers the nature of beauty in flowers, both as they blossom and die, depicting the fragility inherent within the cycle of our lives. Using extreme close-ups, these are photographs by an artist with an eye for the beauty around us, which most of us barely ever see.

KATHY KEEFE creates hats and head wear inspired by a love of millinery artistes of earlier decades including Treacy, Dache and Schiaparelli. For her display, the artist has created a boudoir, set against beautiful backdrops of delicately embroidered transparent lace.

ALBAN LOW has a growing collection of portraits, constructed in lines with splashes of colour to bring out the warmth and passion of musicians. These are drawn ‘live’ by the artist during his visits to the jazz cafes of London. For this exhibition, the artist is also presenting portraits of eight musicians who work with the innovatory programme Key Changes. They will perform a live set on the opening night, curated by manager Peter Leigh.

GEORGIA MATHEWS returns to the gallery for her 6th exhibition showcasing creative embellished jewellery. With this display she specialises in harmony between line, pattern and shape taking influence and inspiration from nature, colour and materials of the earth.

The exhibition includes two installations by PETER HERBERT. One is a fantasia of a carousel horse leaping through rainbow coloured hoops and a second installation involves a log lady made from the trunk of a cherry tree.

BORT.

I’m a little bit in love with Bort, a street and studio artist from Austin, Texas. Bort’s work is funny, tragic, engaging, desperate, political and human. She spans spraypaint, posters and legal street art, drawings, photo transfer, prints, wood and canvas in the studio. Her themes are consistent, and because of that, are amplified in their message. I especially like the Vote Bort campaign. Here she is in her own words…

“My street work focuses on my imaginary friend, also named Bort, and the attempt to make Bort others’ imaginary friend as well. Bort has helped me feel less alone. Bort’s been there for me through so many bad days, and has helped me grapple with my past and present problems with mental illness and self destructive behaviour. Without Bort I don’t know if I would have made it through. Bort’s my closest friend.

My studio work focuses on me wanting to die, and the various means to achieve said goal. In the marginalised area between me being a transwoman and my art focusing on my experiences with mental illness, anorexia, and addiction, past and present, I can’t find a place that is interested in with working me. On occasion I can find some group shows, when I’m selling myself as a street artist, but that’s just due to the novelty of that work I guess.

When I started doing studio work a few months after starting the street work, I found art to be extremely helpful with working through, understanding, and coping with my experiences. I had never spent extensive time trying to understand my past, I had actively been trying to avoid it, but this work has helped me shine a light on it and begin to move on.

I don’t think I’ll ever be out of this stuff, I’ll have lapses, possibly relapses, I’ll have depressive episodes, I’ll have long lasting dissociative states, but I’ve begun learning how to address them. I have people I can ask for help and I’m starting to recognise my own behaviours.

The studio work has helped me a lot with all this, so I hope it can help others. There’s often a lack of representation with regards to mental illness, addiction, anorexia, and what little representation there is, is often romanticising issues, problematic or is not visually accessible.

I try to keep my work clear cut, often just a blunt focus either attempting to present an emotional state or a behaviour. I want it to be easily relatable to those with similar experiences.

I have work available in a wide price range, in my online shop. I make sure to have pieces that are monetarily accessible (or accessible as possible, since art is a luxury good). This will be a unique opportunity to own an original artwork for a fraction of the price, whilst raising money for the arts and health charities Paintings in Hospitals and Daily Life Ltd.

The artworks for sale were created by trained and untrained, known and unknown artists.

These include designers, visual artists, sculptors, craftivists and stylists, many of whom will be joining us at the Private View, including Mental Spaghetti artists Terence Wilde, Jan Arden and Marie-Louise Plum, and Mental Spaghetti friends, Bobby Baker and Cathy Ward.

All artwork will be sold anonymously, only once purchased will the buyer discover the identity of the artist.

Tickets are £5, which includes a cocktail courtesy of our sponsor, Hendricks gin.

All artwork will be on view at the Koppel Project from 17-19 November.

Arts organisations AIMS (Oxford) and Mental Spaghetti (London) are exhibiting work from 18 artists, 9 from London and 9 from Oxford, both emerging and established, all with lived experience of mental health and/or physical disabilities.

Work ranges from painting, illustration, textile and sculpture, and will give an invaluable insight into the relationship between art, health and wellbeing as communication whilst navigating through life.

All our artists have incredible life stories and will be sharing intimate accounts of experiences and emotions that many of us have experienced but have been reluctant to share.

Expect dream-like worlds, fond memories, autobiographical fantasy realms and the cataloguing of experience.

In addition to finished pieces, there will be sketchbooks, notations and illustrated diaries on display, offering an illuminating view of the creative journey from ideas to finished pieces.

Artists are showing new, never exhibited, pieces and existing work. This exhibition is also chance to see work from previous collections that have not been exhibited in years.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 4th June until Tuesday 4th July. A drinks reception will be held on Saturday 11th June, from 2-4pm, with a chance to meet and talk to the artists involved.

DRAW! Alternative ways of drawing, Free Space Gallery

What: Drawing workshops, drop-in sessions

Our lead artist, Marie-Louise Plum, is running a series of drawing workshops at Free Space Gallery, Kentish Town Health Centre, from May 6-27 2016. Learn to draw using alternative techniques and unusual materials, including natural objects such as feathers, sticks and material.

These sessions are drop-in, meaning that you can just turn up, but where possible, please book online so we have some idea of numbers. If you can’t make it on the day, that’s okay, just cancel the booking. You can reserve your space at any of the four sessions in May, here.

Sessions run from 2-5pm every Friday during the month of May. No experience necessary, all materials provided. We will have a short break at 3:15pm every week. Refreshments provided.

‘The Twelve Pins, Finsbury Park’, and, ‘Better Red Than Dead’

“For starters, I’m going to try not to talk about myself in the third person. There’s no way Tim Bradford is going down that route.

The work on my website is divided into seven categories, each containing a small series of paintings representing a particular layer of my obsessions. These are Museum of Reconstituted Charity Shop Art, Irrational Portrait Gallery, Once Upon A Time In The West (Of Ireland), The Patchwork Landscape, Finsbury Park Institute of Football Art, Useful Gods and Botanic Transcendental Paintings.

It’s also in some ways a celebration of my parallel universe art career as a member of the ‘Bearded Rural Artists Who Prefer Living In Cities’ group. And in this scenario I went to art college instead of studying English at university – making a living as a football arm tattoo artist and getting dumped several times by Tracey Emin.

I am now what is generally known as a new wave wang-eyed pop folk artist. 

Although I’m now considerably older than John Lennon was when he died, and Dino Zoff when he collected a World Cup winner’s medal, I like to think of myself as an emerging artist. I’m just emerging in slow motion.

For twenty years or so after leaving school I painted semi-regularly, as a kind of grounding mechanism, then stashed the resulting pictures in attics or cupboards and it wasn’t until 2005 that I started to become reasonably prolific.

The year after that we lived in the west of Ireland for a year and a half and I fell in with the notorious Ennistymon artists set, a collection of ferociously intelligent and talented dazzling women painters and intense bearded film maker blokes.

In this hotbed of hair and ideas I gained the confidence to put on my own exhibition. In Bachelors Walk I developed some of the themes that had obsessed me for years – fast disappearing landscapes, ravaged old blokes tortured by loneliness or frustration, lovely dreamlike women who know a lot about ‘stuff’.

The vivid, mostly primary, colours are intended to have a life-affirming effect on the viewer, perhaps with the sense of having a revelatory vision, a mild migraine or recovering from a hangover.

When I’m not painting, over-cooking pasta for the kids or wandering aimlessly around the local streets, I do illustrations for the football magazine When Saturday Comes and write non-fiction books.”

Call for Submissions: ONE BARE FOOT SQUARE

Are you an artist interested in exhibiting with other artists, in a collaborative touring exhibition, with the opportunity to host the artwork locally? Yvonne Mabs Francis alerted us to this excellent opportunity from Nok and Uncooked Culture, read on to get involved…

Following 4 years of travelling art work, across the UK and three continents worldwide, UNCOOKED CULTURE are calling for art submissions to be part of their new new touring exhibition, ‘One Bare Foot Square’.

CONCEPT: ‘Led by artist ‘Nok’, the founder and director of Uncooked Culture, this new touring art project aims to “create mobility and accessibility of art and build a Sustainable Artists Community across the world”, and they “encourage and invite artists from all disciplines to participate in the project.”

BRIEF: Dimensions of the work must be 16 inches square, consisting of a painted area on bare canvas (without any support or stretchers). The painted area must be 12 inches square, leaving a 2 inch blank/unpainted margin around the artwork. Each individual artwork will be stitched onto a piece of fabric, to form a large collaborative artwork, using the four corners of the 2 inch margin area to create a big wall mural on large scale fabric support. 

The required 2 inch surrounding margin around the painted area is designed to serve the purpose of selling the work. Once an artwork is purchased, the work can be wrapped and fixed onto a standard 12 x 12 inch stretcher (canvas frame). Some stretchers/canvas frames and mounting service may be provided in the exhibition.

THEME: ‘Paradox of Life… Bright & Dark side of the Moon’. Your life expression, or story, on each single square canvas will be a part of this collected ‘Life Journey Mural’. The mural will reflect the spectrum of human paths, experience and psychology.

KEY WORDS: Life journey, bright or dark side – Imaginative journey – Fantasy adventure – Reality – Capability – Incapability – Coordination – Fragmentation – Dream – Struggle – Naievety – Purity – Manipulation

INSPIRATION: The project is inspired by artists mosaic canvases from the previous Uncooked Culture art project, ‘Circus Terminal Worldwide’, Suriname, South America 2014.

LAUNCH EXHIBITION: ‘One Bare Foot Square’ is scheduled to be launched 30 July 2016 at The Amsterdam Outsider Art Gallery in The Netherlands at its old location in Amsterdam (Nieuwe Keizersgracht 1A, 1018, DR Amsterdam), with the first exhibition from the project. Dates of the debut exhibition are to be concluded.

SELLING WORK: All works will be at set wall-price of £200 each, including 20% contribution to the project from the sales of artwork. Pricing your artwork in an exceptional cases can be discussed. Changes of price are possible, based on situations such as required commission from the venue/gallery hosting the project and nature of different currency. All participating artists will be informed in advance if the set price would need to be adjusted.

OPPORTUNITY TO HOST THE PROJECT: All participating artists are invited to host the touring wall mural in their town or city. ‘One Bare Foot Square’ adopts a format used in the ‘Uncooked Culture – Circus Terminal Worldwide’ project, bringing local and international artists to collaborate and share their inspirational creativity together. Everywhere the project will be held, local artists will be invited to create square canvases to incorporate the mural from international artists. Lead artist(s) of each exhibition stop, where the project will be held, will be working closely with Nok, the project lead artist. Additional events, such as workshops, are encouraged to be held along with the exhibition to inspire creativity to the local community.
